The clinic IT continuity checklist
A practical starting point for practice managers reviewing everyday IT dependencies.
1. Map the patient-day workflow
List the systems needed for scheduling, check-in, clinical documentation, scanning and printing. Record the vendor and support contact for each. Keep patient records out of this checklist.
2. Review staff access
Identify shared accounts and confirm an owner for onboarding and offboarding. Check whether MFA is enabled where supported and whether inactive accounts have been removed.
3. Test recovery
Identify which files and systems your backups actually cover. Arrange a restore test with the responsible provider, and document the result and any gaps.
4. Prepare for interruptions
Document how staff should operate during internet, printer or workstation failures. Keep vendor phone numbers accessible without relying on the unavailable system.
5. Confirm responsibilities
Agree who maintains devices, who supports the EHR application, and who approves security changes. Review applicable contractual requirements before allowing a provider access.
General operational guidance. Consult your IT provider and designated advisers about your specific environment.
